چکیده

We report on a combined theoretical–experimental study of ring formation by plant species in water-limited systems. We explored, under controlled laboratory conditions, the relationships between water regime and ring formation using a small perennial grass, Poa bulbosa L., as a model species. Our experimental studies show that ring-shaped patches are formed as a result of differential biomass growth across the patches, in spite of uniform water supply. The theoretical studies were based on a mathematical model for vegetation pattern formation that captures feedback processes between biomass growth and water exploitation. Our model studies reproduce the experimental findings and predict that spots destabilize to form rings in species whose lateral root augmentation per unit biomass growth is sufficiently small. This finding explains why rings in nature are formed by dense clonal plants. # 2007 Elsevier B.V. Synergy between pathogen release and resource availability in plant invasion.

Why do some exotic plant species become invasive? Two common hypotheses, increased resource availability and enemy release, may more effectively explain invasion if they favor the same species, and therefore act in concert. This would be expected if plant species adapted to high levels of available resources in their native range are particularly susceptible to enemies, and therefore benefit mo...

Priority Setting Meets Multiple Streams: A Match to Be Further Examined?; Comment on “Introducing New Priority Setting and Resource Allocation Processes in a Canadian Healthcare Organization: A Case Study Analysis Informed by Multiple Streams Theory”

With demand for health services continuing to grow as populations age and new technologies emerge to meet health needs, healthcare policy-makers are under constant pressure to set priorities, ie, to make choices about the health services that can and cannot be funded within available resources. In a recent paper, Smith et al apply an influential policy studies framework – Kingdon’s multiple str...

Why Do Firms Build Network Partnerships in Hypercompetitive Environments? an Explanation from the Resource-based View

D’Aveni (1994) suggests that the only way for firms to survive in a hypercompetitive environment is to relentlessly compete against each other. Yet, we notice that intense competitive conditions lead firms not only to compete but also cooperate. Using the RBV as a theoretical lens, we examine why firms tend to form cooperative network partnerships in hypercompetitive environments. We suggest th...

Importance of plasticity and decision-making strategies for plant resource acquisition in spatio-temporally variable environments.

* Plants must cope with environmental variation in space and time. Phenotypic plasticity allows them to adjust their form and function to small-scale variations in habitat quality. Empirical studies have shown that stoloniferous plants can exploit heterogeneous habitats through plastic ramet specialization and internal resource exchange (division of labour). * Here we present a spatially explic...

Cervical Ectopic Pregnancy in Resource Deprived Areas: A Rare and Difficult Diagnosis.

Ectopic pregnancy is a common cause of morbidity and mortality in women of reproductive age especially in resource deprived areas worldwide. Cervical ectopic pregnancy is a rare, life threatening form of ectopic pregnancy which needs a high index of suspicion for diagnosis, thus adding a complex twist to the dilemma faced by the obstetrician in resource deprived areas. A case of a cervical ecto...
